Description

Permabond ET5428 Epoxy Adhesive

Permabond ET5428 epoxy adhesive is a two-part structural adhesive specifically developed for bonding composite materials and high-performance assemblies where strength, durability and environmental resistance are critical.

This toughened epoxy system offers excellent resistance to impact, vibration and elevated temperatures, making it suitable for use in demanding industrial, marine and engineering applications.

Its thixotropic (non-sag) consistency allows for easy application on vertical surfaces, while its ability to fill gaps up to 5mm makes it highly effective on uneven or imperfect substrates.

The black colour is also ideal for carbon fibre bonding, providing a visually consistent finish.

Key Features & Benefits

  • High strength structural bonding
  • Designed for carbon fibre, GRP and composite materials
  • Excellent impact and vibration resistance
  • High temperature resistance
  • Gap filling up to 5mm
  • Thixotropic (non-drip) – suitable for vertical surfaces
  • Easy to mix and apply (2:1 ratio)
  • Colour matched for carbon fibre applications

Typical Applications

  • Carbon fibre bonding
  • GRP / fibreglass assemblies
  • Composite panel bonding
  • Automotive and motorsport applications
  • Marine structures and repairs
  • Metal to composite bonding
  • Engineering and structural assemblies

👉 For bonding low surface energy plastics such as PE or PP, see our Permabond TA4610 adhesive.

👉 For faster-curing structural bonding systems, compare with Plexus MA300 and MA310 MMA adhesives.

Technical Overview

  • Type: Two-part structural epoxy
  • Mix ratio: 2:1 (by volume & weight)
  • Viscosity: Thixotropic paste
  • Maximum gap fill: 5mm
  • Pot life: 10–20 minutes @ 23°C
  • Handling time: 30–45 minutes
  • Working strength: ~1 hour
  • Full cure: 24–48 hours (23°C)
  • Accelerated cure: 1 hour @ 60°C

Performance Data

  • Shear strength (steel): up to 35 N/mm²
  • Shear strength (carbon fibre): >25 N/mm²
  • Peel strength (aluminium): 150–250 N/25mm
  • Impact resistance: 30–40 kJ/m²
  • Hardness: 65–75 Shore D
  • Service temperature: -40°C to elevated temperatures
  • Glass transition temperature (Tg): 50–60°C

👉 Provides excellent strength retention even at elevated temperatures.

Why Choose ET5428 Over Other Adhesives?

Permabond ET5428 epoxy adhesive is engineered for maximum strength and durability, particularly in composite bonding applications.

Compared to MMA adhesives:

  • Better temperature resistance
  • Superior chemical resistance
  • Higher long-term durability
  • Excellent performance on carbon fibre and GRP

👉 If bonding plastics such as PE or PP, MMA adhesives like TA4610 or TA4611 are more suitable.

👉 For a full comparison, see our structural adhesive guide.

When Should You Use ET5428?

Choose ET5428 when:

  • Bonding carbon fibre or composites
  • High strength structural bonding is required
  • The joint will experience impact, vibration or fatigue
  • Elevated temperature performance is needed
  • Gap filling or uneven surfaces are present

Application Guidance

  1. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and grease-free
  2. Degrease using acetone or isopropanol
  3. Lightly abrade metals to remove oxide layer
  4. Mix adhesive (2:1 ratio) using static mixer
  5. Apply to one surface and assemble within pot life
  6. Clamp until handling strength is achieved

⚠️ Larger quantities and higher temperatures reduce working time (exothermic reaction)

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Not recommended for strong oxidising environments
  • Always test substrates before full application
  • Use appropriate PPE and follow SDS guidance
  • Store between 5°C and 25°C
