Description
Permabond 2K Primer prepares surfaces for adhesive bonding by combining an adhesion promoter with a simple visual check of surface condition. It helps improve the consistency of surface preparation and protects metal surfaces, supporting durable bonds in demanding environments.
The mixed primer forms a red solution that shows how well the surface wets. If it spreads across the prepared area, this indicates good wetting. If it beads into droplets, further surface preparation is required.
This makes Permabond 2K Primer particularly useful where reliable surface preparation is essential, including metal assemblies exposed to humidity, outdoor weathering or underwater service. The complete adhesive and substrate combination must also be suitable for the intended conditions.
Key benefits
Improved adhesion
Contains an adhesion promoter to help improve bond strength on suitable surfaces.
Greater long-term durability
Helps bonded joints retain strength when exposed to challenging environmental conditions.
Visible surface preparation check
The red solution makes it easier to identify poor wetting before applying adhesive.
Corrosion protection
Helps protect metal surfaces against corrosion, supporting the durability of the bonded joint.
Suitable materials
Permabond identifies the following materials as candidates for treatment with 2K Primer:
- Aluminium
- Mild steel and stainless steel
- Copper
- Chrome
- Zinc and galvanised zinc
- Glass and ceramic
- Carbon fibre and GRP
- Ferrite, magnets and tungsten
Suitability depends on the specific surface, adhesive and service conditions. Test the complete bonding process before production use.
How to use Permabond 2K Primer
- Prepare the surfaces. Degrease and lightly abrade all areas to be bonded, then remove dust.
- Mix the primer. Combine the contents of the supplied A and B bottles in the larger bottle and attach the sprayer.
- Shake well.
- Apply a thin layer of mixed primer to the bonding area.
- Check surface wetting. If the primer beads into droplets or wets poorly, further surface preparation is needed.
- Remove excess primer with a clean, dry cloth or tissue once good wetting is achieved.
- Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before applying adhesive.
- Use the mixed primer within 8 hours.
Follow the preparation and application instructions for your chosen adhesive alongside the primer instructions.

Frequently asked questions
Is Permabond 2K Primer an adhesive?
No. It is a surface treatment used before applying a suitable adhesive.
Can I use it with every Permabond adhesive?
Compatibility should be checked for the particular adhesive and substrate combination. Contact Adsupply for advice on your application.
Does it replace cleaning and abrasion?
No. Permabond’s instructions require degreasing, light abrasion and dust removal before applying the primer.
What does it mean if the primer forms droplets?
Beading indicates poor surface wetting. Further preparation is needed before bonding.
Can it help with outdoor bonding applications?
Yes. Permabond 2K Primer can help improve environmental durability and protect metal surfaces against corrosion. Select an adhesive that is also suitable for the expected exposure.
